A 100-year-old movie theater: Babylon Berlin Cinema

Have you ever wondered what going to the movies was like almost 100 years ago? Back then, each film show was the result of work by dozens of people – including an entire orchestra that provided sound for silent films. Alongside traditional musical instruments, many sound effects were created using a unique cinema organ: the sounds of a railway, a fire siren, the clatter of hooves, the chirping of birds, car horns, a telephone, and so on. A total of 34 different effects!

The Babylon cinema at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz (then called Bülowplatz) first opened its doors in 1929. Surviving the war with minimal damage, it became a seminal theater in East Berlin. After closing for renovation in 1993, it reopened and has continued to operate, becoming one of Berlin’s most fascinating landmarks. It’s the only cinema in Germany with a cinema organ still in its original location. The cinema regularly shows silent film classics accompanied by a live orchestra and organ.

Tickets to these screenings aren’t cheap, but here’s a life hack: every Saturday at midnight, you can secure a seat for free! This special offer, “0 hours, 0€,” has been running since 2014.

If you haven’t yet explored the classics of German cinema, start with Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. The film’s complex plot, special effects, and acting are mind-blowing – even more so considering it was made in 1927! The orchestra plays so skillfully, you’ll sometimes forget it’s live music and not a soundtrack.

Silent movies have another advantage: they’re great for visiting parents or friends who may not speak German or English. An unforgettable experience is guaranteed! Occasional subtitles appear on the screen to explain the plot, but you can also read up on the storyline beforehand or clarify anything during the intermission (yes, silent films are long enough to have a break, just like in the theater!).
